# Devils Fire Tom Fitzgerald as high expectations are missed

NEW JERSEY—The New Jersey Devils announced Monday that they have parted ways with general manager Tom Fitzgerald. He finishes his tenure with a 40-34-3 record. Fitzgerald led the Devils to a franchise-record 52 wins and 112 points in the 2022-23

NEW JERSEY—The New Jersey Devils announced Monday that they have parted ways with general manager [Tom Fitzgerald](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/f/fitzgto01.html?ref=the-city-limits-coverage-pod.ghost.io). He finishes his tenure with a 40-34-3 record.

Fitzgerald led the Devils to a franchise-record 52 wins and 112 points in the 2022-23 season. Since then, the team has gone 120–106–15 and has failed to reach the postseason

Fitzgerald is credited with building the current core. This includes the long-term signings of [Jack](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/h/hugheja03.html?ref=the-city-limits-coverage-pod.ghost.io) and [Luke Hughes](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/h/hughelu01.html?ref=the-city-limits-coverage-pod.ghost.io), [Jesper Bratt](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/b/brattje01.html?ref=the-city-limits-coverage-pod.ghost.io), and [Timo Meier](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/m/meierti01.html?ref=the-city-limits-coverage-pod.ghost.io) and establishing New Jersey as a top destination for free agents.

Managing Partner David Blitzer noted in today’s statement that while Fitzgerald changed the team’s trajectory, the organization felt it was time for a “new direction” to effectively compete for a Stanley Cup again. The team currently has 5 games remaining in the regular season.

The Devils will now begin a search for a general manager to construct a playoff-worthy roster.
