George Lombard Jr. Delivers Storybook MLB Debut

NEW YORK — Tuesday night in the Bronx was just about as storybook as it can get. It might look on the surface like a typical 2-0 win where the Yankees' pitching excelled, the offense struggled but did just enough to come away with a victory.

That is all true. But for a majority of the game, only one thing mattered: the debut of George Lombard Jr.

The Yankees needed to make the call to the minors with the production out of their shortstop position since June 1st, with the tandem of Anthony Volpe and Jose Caballero posting a combained 81 wRC+ while watching Lombard Jr. light up AAA both offensivly and defensivly. Now, Volpe finds himself in AAA, and Caballero in a super-utility role, with Lombard Jr. taking over the starting shortstop duties from here on.

Lombard Jr. was calm in his debut and gave fans a taste of what could be the future. He turned a double play in the second inning that is not a normal double play. It was a sparkler. As Paul O'Neil said on the Yankees broadcast, "Wow," he said. “That’s a double play the Yankees haven’t made all year."

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman noted in Spring Training that Lombard Jr. was ready for the majors defensively. It showed last night. The Yankees' defense was clearly crisper with Lombard Jr. at shortstop than anyone else. He is a vacuum at the position.

“It’s one of those plays that you practice,” Said Lombard Jr. of his defense. “I’ve made that play countless times in practice. Just get into the game and your body kind of takes over. Not much thinking went into it.”

"I just think the athleticism but the physicality that he can play it with is really what stands out." Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. "Like a puma."

It was not just the defense of Lombard Jr. that impressed, but what he did with his bat. Prior to last night, the Yankees had just one extra-base hit on an 0-2 pitch this season. That changed when Lombard Jr. ambushed an 0-2 sweeper from Cardinals righty Hunter Dobbins and launched it into the left field seats for his first MLB hit, a solo home run.

"Obviously, a great, great first night for him." Boone said "The home run was great. The defense was tremendous."

Lombard Jr. is typically not known for his power but has shown more of it this season in AAA, posting 12 home runs across three levels (10 at AA and AAA combined) compaired to just nine in all of 2025.

"I mean excitement," Lombard Jr. said of how he felt after homering in his MLB debut. I'm still kind of processing, but yeah, it was really cool. And then, also, like I said, being a close game, and it was a big run. So yeah, this is probably a moment, a swing, a day I won't forget forever."

Lombard Jr. was not the only Lombard to hit a professional home run at the debut at their level. George's younger brother, Jacob, who was drafted by the Marlins last month, also hit a home run in his second at-bat to left field, also against a player in the Cardinals organization.

When Boone was told about this postgame, he responded by saying, “They [Lombard Jr.'s parents] might want to head to Vegas."
