Yankees Reactions: Yankees Lose Opener in Toronto

TORONTO — The Yankees lost 3-1 against the Blue Jays in the series opener at Rogers Centre. They drop to 68-54 on the season.

It was another day when the Yankees offense did not perform and left opportunities and meek, awful at-bats, including a ninth inning that saw the Yankees retired on four pitches.

Aaron Boone was also ejected in this game to add to the drama in the affair. Boone was commenting on home plate umpire Vic Carrapaza's low strike zone. Carrapaza bated him into an argument and threw him out of the game. Boone certainly got his money's worth, but Boone did not argue enough in the first place to warrant an ejection based on the umpire repeatedly asking what was said, which was simply "the ball is low."

Cole's Outing

Gerrit Cole was not bad today. His command was off early, but he settled in as the game went on a bit. The defense betrayed him in the sixth inning, with Luis Garcia Jr. committing his first error as a Yankee on what should have been an inning-ending double play. It led to the Blue Jays scoring two runs.

The two runs came after Cole went to pick the runner off at first base and catcher Austin Wells called time out instead. The Yankees would have had Okamoto dead to rights had they not granted the time out. It seemed to rattle Cole, who gave up a single to Vladimir Guerrero, the error (which should have ended the inning), and an RBI double to Alejandro Kirk.

"Tough scoop." Aaron Boone said of the error. "You know where Mac doesn't get a ton on. It's a little bit of an in-between hop, so it's a tough one. It's a tough chance all around. But then once he got his back to the play, I think he just got overly aggressive with throwing to third there, especially in a two-out situation"

"I think when his back got to the play, when he turned around and got in his sightline again, obviously he saw him over there, and I think he should have obviously held it... It was late in picking up Louis, but that's a play where balls hit firm like that, especially on the turf."

On the error, Blue Jays first baseman Guerrero was kneed in the head and is undergoing concussion protocol, according to Blue Jays manager John Schneider.

Yankees Offense

The Yankees offense was once again silent today. Their lone run was on a solo home run off the bat of Trent Grisham, who has been hot as of late.

The Yankees offense wasted chances with runners in scoring position in the early innings and couple that with some bad baserunning desicions, the Yankees really did not put themselves in the best position to win.
