Yankees Preview: Back in the Bronx to take on the Tigers

THE BRONX, NY --- The Yankees return from a 2-5 road trip to take on the Tigers at Yankee Stadium. The offense has slumped during this four-game losing streak, and the pitching has not been to the caliber it was when the team was winning.

This week should include the returns of Ryan McMahon and Trent Grisham from the IL, which should help the Yankees lineup and defensive issues.

Prior to the game, the Yankees announced that closer David Bednar has been placed on the paternity list and Jake Bird has been recalled from AAA Scranton. It will be interesting to see who the Yankees have close games with Bednar away. Camilo Doval has been inconsistent this season, and if Fernando Cruz does not have command of his splitter, he can't get batters out, as was the case Sunday night.

First pitch Monday will be at 7:05pm on YES and the Gotham Sports App.

Ben Rice returns to the leadoff spot, even though he's struggled in the month of June. Rice has better numbers at home, but leading him off is a curious decision. Jose Caballero will anchor third base, and Anthony Volpe will be at shortstop. Austin Wells remains behind the plate tonight, catching Ryan Weathers.

Pitching Matchup

Yankees LHP Ryan Weathers (3-5, 3.95)

Last week, Ryan Weathers had one of his better starts in a bit. He left a lot of pitches in the zone and went on the attack and the 'try and hit it' route, and it worked. He outdueled Tarik Skubal. This week, Weathers will look to have the same success against the same lineup he faced last time out. It is important that Weathers gives the Yankees some length and, more importantly, allows them to take an early lead.

Tigers RHP Casey Mize (2-5, 2.95)

The Yankees scored four runs against Mize in Detroit last week. They had some levels of success but were dominated for much of the outing. The Yankees offense slumped in Boston but has been better all season at Yankee Stadium. Cody Bellinger and Ben Rice are going to need to be better this homestand then they were on the road trip.
